GMC’s 12 WEEK JAM for ADULTS currently runs in two sessions from September through December and January through May. (contact josh@gowanusmusicclub.com for exact start dates.)
Weekly rehearsals are two-hours long and take place at Complete Music Studios in Prospect Heights/Brooklyn. (closest trains are 2/3 Grand Army Plaza Station, Q/ 7th Ave/Park Slope Station, C / Washington/Clinton Station and G/Washington Ave Station)
Each session culminates in an amazing opportunity to perform at The Bell House on 7th street and 3rd Avenue, Gowanus, Brooklyn at the end of each semester.
WHY
Because you always wanted to play in a rock band and never did! Because it will make you laugh, think, feel happy, open up a new side of your brain, work hard, meet new people, play music, relax, smile etc…
WHAT HAPPENS
GMC organizes adult students into bands of specific genres, taking into account each person’s chief musical interests. On day one, first session, we begin with a meet and greet of our fellow bandmates and begin song selections. Students are asked to select and suggest their favorite songs while our professional musician instructors access each band’s overall skill level and recommend additional appropriate songs. Original songs are definitely encouraged, and considered on an individual basis by each band. Chord charts and arrangements for songs will be written with the guidance of instructors and practiced at each weekly two-hour session. On the upcoming sessions, the focus will remain on learning chosen songs and individual parts. Chord charts will eventually be removed so that students learn to commit the songs to memory. Finally, a band name is chosen by each group.
Because our 12 WEEK JAM allows more time to prepare for the performance showcase, students will be asked to do extra preparation at home and allowing teachers to examine the individual parts more carefully with students. Final sessions are dedicated to refining the arrangements and adding tips on performance etiquette and style. The elements of performance are incorporated into the final rehearsals, and everyone gets to ROCK OUT at the concert!
